I’m dying.
Don’t worry, not really, but it sure feels that way.
Think
of your favorite food/food group. Close your eyes and really
picture it in your mind. Taste it… smell it. Let it
really sink in how much you enjoy it. Now, imagine you can’t have
it anymore. Any of it.
Welcome to my world.
Emery
has developed quite the skin problem over the past few months of his
life. It started with the normal cradle cap, but as that got
worse, so did the rest of his skin. The sides of his face, as
well as his forehead, and a pretty bad spot on his shoulder, are flaky
and sometimes weepy. I know, gross right? I feel so bad for
him, as it obviously itches him, and must drive him nuts. He’s
such a happy guy except when he’s not being distracted, and suddenly
realizes just how much he itches. So, I took him to the
pediatrician, who told me to try going off dairy for a few weeks and
see if it clears up.
What? "Go off dairy"? Me? That’s like all I eat! I love everything dairy.
But, I love the kid more, so I’m going to do it. Actually, I
should say, I’m in the process of doing it. Five days and
counting. I never realized just how hard it would be! I
have my doubts that his skin problems are the result of a dairy allergy
though, as it seems like the first place that would show up is where
the "dairy laden milk" comes out….diaper rash. But he’s never
shown a hint of redness down there. In fact, that’s the only area
that doesn’t seem to be affected!
Anyway, I used
to have a big glass of milk with every meal, as well as a few bowls of
cereal each week, yogurt the alternate days. We also had icecream
for dessert a lot, and cheese. Don’t even get me started on
cheese. God, how I miss it. Every time I go to get a snack,
or make a meal, I suddenly realize I can’t eat it, because it’s loaded
with a dairy product! So. Frustrating.
But, I’m sucking it up and trying to find alternatives for
consumption. I tried my cereal with soy milk the other day.
Don’t. Ever. Do. That. That’s all I’m gonna say on the
matter. Basically, I’m going to suffer through these few weeks
and just hope to god dairy isn’t the culprit. The fact that both
Barney and Lindsay have skin issues as well, leads me to believe that
this is just an unfortunate genetic thing we’re going to have to deal
with throughout his life. I may have to start washing his clothes
seperately, and drying them with no dryer sheet, and only giving him
baths every few days, with nothing but water and maybe a mild shampoo
for his hair.
Poor kid. Hopefully he gets better
with age. And hopefully I can return to eating everything I love
so much soon. Until then, I think I may loose a lot of weight,
which isn’t such a bad prospect either.
It is VERY hard giving up dairy. Been there done that. But the son was much better off for it. Give it time, Emery MAY show signs of improvement. Good plan to do his laundry different too. Have as little perfumes, scents, anything like that on his skin. And he may grow out of it. Though given Barney & Lindsay’s skin, it’s doubtful.
I’ll spring for a huge ice cream party when you’re done nursing the guy!!!
Oh honey! That sucks. I know its got to be rough on you. Maybe you need to wash all of your clothes with no scents, perfumes, etc. Couldn’t hurt Barney or Lindsay’s skin conditions either.
So now my delimma is what am I going to make for you to eat on Wednesday night? No dairy! Eeeee! I’ll have to make something special just for you.
