Those of you who have recently checked the picture galleries may have found the one of my mother alone, soaked and stinky in swamp water. This was the wonderful result of our lovely day, communing with nature.
Barney, Lindsay, my Mom, and I, went to a scent garden in the area where you can touch and smell the plants as well as look at them. It is set up for the blind, so that all of the plants, flowers, and herbs have a strong scent. We thought this would be a great outing, especially for my mom, because of her sight issues, and Lindsay, for the multi-sensory experience.
Well, Lindsay fell asleep after two minutes as usual, but my mom really seemed to enjoy guessing the plants by their scent and feel, and we had a great time. It was a beautiful day, and we saw that they had a really cool-looking nature trail through the wetlands. It was a mile long, raised boardwalk loop, and my mom said she was up for the adventure. What an adventure she got.
We had a terrific walk, and I spent most of it looking back, keeping an eye on my mom, because she wanted me to go in front of her so she could just follow me. Then, about 50 feet from the end of the trail, we stopped for a second, and when we took off again, I heard a gigantic “SPLOOSH!”, and there was my mom, swimming in the swamp. Of course she was wearing white pants that day, and they were absolutely covered in swamp muck! The whole side of her body was soaked and it smelled terrible! We opted to just head home instead of continuing with our day of communning with nature, as my mom wasn’t really in the “communing” mood anymore. She sat on a blanket the whole way home, and obviously took a shower right away. I had to wash her pants three times to try to get the smell and the stain out. I don’t know what lurks in those estuaries, but let me tell you, it’s potent!
Luckily, we capped off the day with a nice picnic in a little meadow clearing with a dock by the lake, which was a lot of fun for all. We didn’t let her near the dock though, just in case.
